What is a CMS?
A content management system is an online system used for managing content such as news articles and website pages. Many times, people who want a CMS don’t actually need one; they only need to control a very specific subset of displayed items on their website in a very specific way, which is better handled using a small custom administration! Actually, a CMS is better suited for those who have the need for a wide variability of content on their website, but don’t necessarily the technical skills to implement complex HTML, CSS, and JavaScript solutions.
Typical CMS solutions also include workflow management, collaborative editing, version control, and file management. The actual CMS practices depend on your business, of course. In terms of installed content management systems, there are commercial solutions, open-source (free to use) solutions, and custom solutions.

Prefabricated CMS Solutions
Two of the most wide-spread open-source CMS solutions are WordPress and Drupal. There are many others, of course, and there are many commercial (paid) solutions available as well. However, we nearly always recommend WordPress for those customers who are looking for a CMS solution that works out of the box, and have had great success with it. To varying degrees, most open-source and some commercial applications can be modified and updated to meet your specific business needs.

Custom CMS Solutions
If your business is unique or if you have unique business practices or needs, then customizing a prefabricated solution may be more expensive than actually creating a new one from the ground up. Also, you may wish to wholly own the CMS solution, which is impossible with most prefabricated solutions.
